3D scanning for dimensional inspection

Surface Scan inspects parts by capturing the full surface with metrology-grade 3D scanning, aligning the scan to your nominal CAD, and reporting exactly where the part deviates from the design.

Because scanning is non-contact and captures the whole surface, it records millions of points across the part rather than the small number of points a touch probe can reach. That suits freeform surfaces, complex castings, thin-walled and delicate parts, and assemblies that have to be measured where they sit. Every scan is aligned to a world coordinate system as standard.

What is a first article inspection?

A first article inspection (FAI) checks that the first parts off a new or changed manufacturing process match the engineering drawing before full production begins. If that part is a newly developed product still being taken from concept to production-ready design, our product design and development service covers that earlier stage. Surface Scan produces first article inspection reports from full-surface 3D scan data: every feature checked against the nominal CAD, with a deviation map and GD&T results, in a report you can hand to your customer or auditor. Measuring delicate prosthetics for medical research

A research team at Imperial College London needed precise, non-destructive measurement of hyper-realistic prosthetic body parts for a medical study. Surface Scan’s dimensional inspection is accurate to 0.020 to 0.050 mm, measured with the Scanology NimbleTrack, a Red Dot Award winner with 0.020 mm resolution. Because it is portable, that accuracy holds on large parts and installed machinery scanned in place. For whole environments or very long-range work, such as a full production line, the FARO Focus extends the reach. Every scan is aligned to a world coordinate system as standard, and our scanning equipment is calibrated by a third party.

A dimensional inspection verifies that a physical part's dimensions and geometry match its design specification. Surface Scan does this with full-surface 3D scanning aligned to your nominal CAD, then reports the result as a deviation map, a GD&T analysis, or a first article inspection report. It is how you prove a part is within tolerance before it ships or goes into service.

Measurement accuracy comes from the Scanology NimbleTrack, which works to 0.020 to 0.050 mm with 0.020 mm resolution. Because it is portable, the NimbleTrack holds that accuracy on large parts and machinery too, scanned in place. For whole environments or very long-range work, such as a full production line, the FARO Focus reaches up to 70 metres at 2 to 4 mm. Every scan is aligned to a world coordinate system as standard, so results are repeatable.

The part itself, posted to us, dropped off, or scanned on site. The nominal CAD model and your tolerances help, since we align the scan to them, but we can work from the part alone and advise on datums and reference points. If you have a drawing rather than a CAD file, send that too.

Yes. The NimbleTrack is portable, so we scan large parts and installed machinery on-site at full accuracy, anywhere in the UK. For whole environments or very long-range jobs, such as a full production line or a building, we use the FARO Focus, which trades some accuracy for reach.

This is where being one supplier helps.
