What does this look like in practice?

Full Journey
Custom heat gun safety attachment for Dover Tints
The problem: Gatis, owner of Dover Tints, kept burning himself with his heat gun during vehicle wrapping. No off-the-shelf guard existed.
What we did: Scanned the heat gun with our NimbleTrack, designed a custom protective shroud in CAD, ran several prototype iterations with Gatis to refine comfort and usability, then produced the final design in black PETG.
The result: 23 units in the first run. Gatis now uses them across all his wrapping and tinting work, and we’re in discussions about adapting the design for other heat gun models commercially.

Design Improvement
Personal electric vehicle electronics housing
The problem: A PEV enclosure kept failing during servicing — plastic screw holes wore out after just a few open/close cycles, leaving the client unable to secure the lid.
What we did: Scanned the existing enclosure, reverse engineered to a parametric CAD model, redesigned with threaded brass inserts and cleaner geometry, then printed in black PETG through multiple prototype iterations.
The result: Enclosure now opens and closes repeatedly without wear. A small but smart redesign turned a fragile component into a professional-grade part built to last.

From Sample to Production
Reproducing a discontinued consumer product
The problem: Caroline had one surviving grocery bag finger protector from her childhood — discontinued and unavailable anywhere. Heavy shopping bags were causing daily pain.
What we did: Scanned the original with our NimbleTrack Wireless at 0.020mm accuracy, reverse engineered to a parametric CAD file, then produced multiple units in cost-effective PLA.
The result: A single sample became a reliable production file. Caroline now has multiple units for her household and is sharing them with others facing the same problem.

What does product design and development involve?
Product design and development is the process of taking a product from initial concept through to a manufactured, production-ready item. At Surface Scan, this follows three phases: Discover & Define (research, feasibility, scan data), Design & Develop (CAD modelling, prototyping, testing), and Deliver & Scale (production-ready design, manufacturing, supplier coordination). Surface Scan manages all three phases from the Ramsgate, Kent facility.
How much does product design cost?
Surface Scan's product design service is priced per phase, not as a retainer - you only pay for the stage you need.
- Phase 1 (Discover & Define: research, feasibility, initial CAD concepts) starts at £600–900.
- Phase 2 (Design & Develop: refined CAD, prototyping, user testing) runs £1,500–6,000 depending on complexity - physical prototyping is quoted separately.
- Phase 3 (Deliver & Scale: DFM, technical documentation, batch production) is scoped per project. A full three-phase project typically starts from around £2,100 at the simpler end.
The biggest variables are the number of components, the number of prototype iterations, and whether manufacturing support is needed. Contact Surface Scan for a specific quote, the initial 30-minute consultation is complimentary.
How long does the product design process take?
A straightforward single-part project can move from concept to manufactured parts in 2-4 weeks. More complex products with multiple components typically take 6-12 weeks across all three phases. If you have a hard deadline, mention it in your enquiry and we'll advise what's realistic.
Do I need a CAD file to get started?
No. Surface Scan works from whatever you have — a rough sketch, a verbal description, photographs, an existing physical part (which we can 3D scan), or a fully developed CAD file. The starting point determines which phase you begin at.
Do I have to use the full process, or can I just use a specific service?
You can do either. Some clients need the full journey from idea to manufactured product. Others just need a specific service: a 3D scan, a CAD model, a batch of prototypes, or a production run. Just tell us what you need and we'll quote for that.
How do I turn my product idea into a real product in the UK?
